Private Jet Terminals and FBOs Explained

A Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) is the private terminal facility at an airport that handles everything from fueling and ground handling to passenger lounges, allowing most travelers to move from car to cabin in 15–20 minutes rather than the two hours typical of commercial travel.

What Is an FBO?

A Fixed-Base Operator is a business licensed to operate at an airport and provide services to private and business aircraft: fueling, hangar and ramp space, ground handling, catering coordination and passenger facilities. Most private jet travelers experience the FBO as the terminal itself — a lounge, a private driveway and direct ramp access to the aircraft.

How the Experience Works, Step by Step

  1. Arrive by car directly at the FBO, typically 15–30 minutes before departure.
  2. Check in at the front desk or lounge; bags are handled by ground staff.
  3. Wait in a private lounge with refreshments while the aircraft is prepared.
  4. Walk or be driven ramp-side directly to the aircraft steps.
  5. Board without security screening lines typical of commercial terminals.
  6. On arrival, disembark directly to a waiting vehicle at the FBO.

How to Choose Between Terminals at the Same Airport

When more than one FBO operates at an airport, consider proximity to the runway in use, customs availability and hours, published amenities, and whether your operator has a preferred handling relationship there. A Viatar advisor can confirm the best option for your specific flight.
